What is EverydayProtect?
EverydayProtect helps you cope financially and minimise disruption to normal life by providing a lump sum if you suffer an injury, die, or spend time in a UK hospital as a result of an accident. An accident is a sudden event which happens by chance and couldn't be expected. The policy covers a wide range of accidental injuries - from broken bones to those that could have a significant impact on your life. After 12 months, it also covers stays in a UK hospital for sickness and pregnancy-related complications.
EverydayProtect is accident protection: it pays out for events and injuries, not for diagnoses of illnesses such as cancer, a heart attack or a stroke (the exception: optional Child Cover includes a diagnosis-of-cancer benefit for a child). That's why it's an excellent complement to critical illness cover and income protection - but not a replacement for them. We're happy to show you how these covers work together.
No health questions
We won't be asked any medical questions to take out the policy. Available to UK residents aged 18 up to their 65th birthday, with cover continuing until the 75th birthday.
From 1 to 5 units of cover
You choose from 1 to 5 units - each unit costs £11 a month and increases your benefits proportionally. The cost of your cover won't change when you make a claim or as you get older.
Multiple claims, cover continues
You can claim for multiple injuries and your policy will continue to protect you in the future. You're covered for accidents wherever they occur in the world (hospital stays: UK only).
A proven claims record
In 2025 MetLife paid 31,553 claims worth £34.1 million - including 18,019 hospitalisation claims and 11,104 broken bone claims. An average of 125 claims every working day.

The maximum amount payable under Core Cover for any one insured event (a single accident resulting in any combination of benefits, or a single uninterrupted hospital stay) is £50,000 per unit of cover (£250,000 with 5 units). Once the maximum total benefit has been paid for a single insured event, the policy ends. From your 70th birthday, Core Cover and Active Lifestyle benefits are reduced by 50%, and the policy terminates on your 75th birthday.
Broken bones - the details
Benefit is paid for each bone broken as a result of an accident - even if you break more than one. Multiple breaks to the same bone from a single accident are treated as a single claim.
- A broken nose is not covered.
- Broken bones caused by osteoporosis, brittle bone disease or other degenerative bone disorders.
- Bruised bones, micro-fractures and stress fractures, and deliberate breaks as part of a surgical procedure.
- Broken bones due to self-inflicted injury or attempted suicide by the policyholder.
Hospitalisation - the details
- Minimum stay: a full 24 hours as an in-patient in a UK hospital.
- Accident and voluntary organ donation: cover begins from the policy start date.
- Sickness: cover starts 1 year after the policy start date. Days spent in hospital due to sickness in the first year are excluded, but further days for the same cause after the 12-month anniversary may be payable.
- Pregnancy-related complications: after 12 months, for stays of at least 5 consecutive days.
- Stays in hospitals outside the UK, stays that began before the policy start date, and optional surgery (apart from voluntary organ donation).
- Admissions to long-term care nursing units, geriatric or pre-convalescent wards, extended care facilities for convalescence or rehabilitation, and drug, alcohol or other addiction rehab units.
Optional: Child Cover (from £2/month)
For £2 per month per unit you can cover all your children - from birth to their 23rd birthday (children don't need to live with you). A child is covered for the same events as you (broken bones, hospitalisation, permanent injuries, accidental death - but not non-accidental death), plus - unusually for an accident policy - a diagnosis-of-cancer benefit.

The maximum payable for any one insured event for a child (a single accident, a single uninterrupted hospital stay, or a diagnosis of cancer) is £5,000 per unit. Child Cover can be added at any time as long as you have at least one eligible child under 18, and can be removed at any time. Optional: Active Lifestyle Cover (from £2/month)
Play sport, run, ski? For £2 per month per unit you'll receive additional payouts for the everyday accidental injuries that can knock you out of action for weeks:
- Dislocation (excluding fingers, thumbs and toes) - £1,000 per unit (up to £5,000), where surgical intervention or manipulation occurred in a hospital setting.
- Complete (grade 3) ligament tear of a knee or ankle joint ligament - £1,000 per unit (up to £5,000).
- Partial (grade 2) ligament tear of a knee or ankle joint ligament - £500 per unit (up to £2,500).
- Tendon rupture - Achilles, bicep brachii (upper arm), quadriceps, hamstring or rotator cuff - £1,000 per unit (up to £5,000).
- In each policy year: one dislocation and/or one tendon rupture or ligament tear.
- Mild or moderate ligament or tendon injuries, and dislocations of fingers, thumbs or toes, are not covered.
- The option can only be added at the start of the policy - once removed, it can't be added again. Children are not covered.
Services included - for you and your family
Wellbeing Support Centre
Free, unlimited support from Health Assured via the Wisdom app, telephone or video call - 24/7, 365 days a year: emotional support, speaking to a qualified nurse, help with debt and tax issues, childcare and eldercare, bereavement and probate.
GP24 - your virtual GP
Appointments with registered GPs 24 hours a day, every day of the year (appointments available 7am-10pm). Included: private prescriptions, private referrals and fit notes, up to 2 second medical opinions per person per year, and consultations in foreign languages may be available by telephone.
Virtual physiotherapy
6 virtual sessions of 30 minutes per year with fully qualified, regulated physiotherapists (HealthHero): tailored exercise plans and safe, independent rehabilitation at home - ideal for musculoskeletal conditions affecting bones, joints and soft tissue.
Access for the whole family
You and your family can use the services - accessed via the myMetLife portal from the start of your policy. These are added benefits, not part of your insurance contract, and may be amended or withdrawn at any time.
How much does it cost?
You choose from 1 to 5 units - the more units you buy, the higher your benefits. The premium is stable: it doesn't rise with age or after a claim (MetLife can review premiums for all policies no more than every 5 years, and never based on your individual circumstances).

For example: the full package (Core + both add-ons) costs £15 per month with 1 unit (£900 over 5 years) and £75 per month with 5 units. Premiums are payable monthly in advance by Direct Debit from a UK bank account. You have 30 days to pay each premium; any unpaid premium is deducted from a claim payment.
What the policy doesn't cover - general exclusions
- Psychiatric illness, depression, mental or anxiety disorders, or stress-related conditions.
- Actual or attempted suicide or self-inflicted injury by the policyholder.
- Assault or fighting, and active participation in an actual or attempted illegal act, including road traffic offences.
- Events where consumption of alcohol or other substances was a significant factor.
- Professional sport, contests of speed and some other sporting activities specified in the terms.
- Aerial flight (including the use of a wingsuit) - other than as a passenger, cabin crew or flight crew of a licensed airline or charter service.
- War or act of foreign enemy, and carrying out military duties.
- Travel to a country where the FCDO advises against travel.
- Unreasonable failure to seek medical advice after symptoms have been noticed or injury has been suffered.
- Certain activities as part of the policyholder's occupation, as specified in the Policy Terms & Conditions.
Significant limitations and rules
- Unit limit: a maximum of 5 units in total across Accident Protection, EverydayProtect and MultiProtect policies. Anything above that doesn't increase benefits, and overpaid premiums are refunded.
- From your 70th birthday Core Cover and Active Lifestyle benefits are reduced by 50%; the policy terminates on your 75th birthday.
- The policy also ends on payment of the TPD benefit, payment of the maximum total benefit for a single insured event, loss of UK residency, death, or cancellation.
- Cancellation: within 30 days of receiving the Policy Terms and Conditions - full refund of premiums (provided you haven't claimed); after that, no refund. Child Cover and Active Lifestyle Cover can be removed at any time (your premium reduces accordingly).
- Claims: phone 0800 917 0100 (option 2), email claims@metlife.uk.com or write to MetLife Claims Team, PO Box 1411, Sunderland SR5 9RB. Claims must be supported by a qualified medical practitioner. We'll gladly manage the claim with you.
- Tax: benefits are free from UK income tax and capital gains tax; inheritance tax may be due on payments made after the death of a person covered.
MetLife has taken steps to ensure all its UK customers are eligible to apply for compensation through the FSCS should the insurer be unable to meet its financial obligations. Complaints are handled by MetLife (0800 917 0100) and then by the Financial Ombudsman Service (0800 023 4567, www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk).
