Accidents happen to careful people too. Personal accident cover pays you a tax-free cash lump sum for broken bones, hospital stays and serious injuries, so a bad week does not turn into a money worry. We arrange MetLife EverydayProtect, the price depends only on the cover you choose, and there are no medical questions to take it out.
Why people choose this cover
Tax-free cash, paid to you
Benefits are paid as a cash lump sum, free of UK income tax and capital gains tax, for you to spend however you need while you recover.
No medical underwriting
There are no health questions and no medical exam to take the policy out, which makes it accessible to people who find other cover hard to arrange.
Your premium stays stable
The cost depends only on the units and add-ons you pick, not your age, health or job. Your premium does not rise just because you claim or get older.
Claim more than once
You can claim for more than one injury over the life of the policy, and for most events the cover simply continues afterwards.
Cover for the family
Optional Child Cover extends protection to your children for the same kinds of events, except non-accidental death, and adds a children’s cancer benefit.
Impartial, fee-free advice
Whole-of-market guidance with no charge to you, as we are paid by the insurer. Polish-speaking advisers are available if that is easier.
How it works
Choose your level of cover
Pick from 1 to 5 units, and add Child Cover or Active Lifestyle Cover if you want them. More units mean proportionally bigger payouts and a higher premium. No medical questions to answer.
An accident or hospital stay
Life happens. You break a bone, spend a night or more in a UK hospital, or suffer a more serious injury covered by the plan.
You make a claim
You let MetLife know what has happened and provide the supporting details. The claims process is designed to be straightforward.
You are paid a tax-free lump sum
MetLife pays your benefit as a cash lump sum, free of UK income tax and capital gains tax, for you to use however you need.
What it covers
Core Cover is always included and pays a set cash amount for a long list of injuries and events, around twenty listed in total. You can also add two optional extras for extra peace of mind.
Broken bones cash
A cash payment if you break a bone in an accident, with a larger amount for major bones such as an arm, leg, hip or wrist, and a smaller amount for minor breaks.
Hospital stay cash, per day
A daily cash amount for every full 24 hours in a UK hospital after an accident. After 12 months it also pays for stays due to sickness and pregnancy-related complications.
Accidental death benefit
A tax-free lump sum paid to your loved ones if you die as a result of an accident, easing the financial shock at the hardest possible time.
Total permanent disablement
The largest single benefit under the plan, paid if an accident leaves you totally and permanently disabled and unable to work.
Permanent injuries
Set cash amounts for serious permanent injuries, for example permanent loss of sight in both eyes, the loss of a hand or foot, or third-degree burns over a large area.
Optional add-ons
Child Cover extends the plan to your children, and Active Lifestyle Cover pays out for certain sports injuries each year, such as a dislocation, tendon rupture or ligament tear.

The key rules to know
Eligibility and important dates
You can take EverydayProtect out aged 18 to under 65, and you must be a UK resident. Core Cover benefits reduce by 50% from age 70, and the policy ends at age 75. Accident cover starts from day 1, but hospital stays due to sickness and pregnancy-related complications are only covered after you have held the policy for 12 months. You have a 30-day cooling-off period to cancel for a full refund if you have not claimed.

Personal accident cover FAQs
What counts as an accident?
In simple terms, an accident is a sudden, unexpected event that causes a physical injury, such as a fall, a sports knock, a car crash or a slip in the home. The policy lists which injuries and events are covered. Some causes are excluded, for example self-inflicted injuries, injuries where alcohol or drugs were a significant factor, professional sport and broken bones caused by conditions like osteoporosis. We will always point you to the full list of exclusions before you take out cover.
How do the units work?
You choose between 1 and 5 units. The more units you buy, the bigger your payouts and the higher your monthly premium, in roughly equal proportion. For example, the hospital stay benefit might be £50 a day at 1 unit and £250 a day at 5 units. Choosing the right number is about balancing the cover you want against the premium you are comfortable paying, and we are happy to help you work that out.
Is the payout taxed?
Benefits paid under EverydayProtect are free from UK income tax and capital gains tax. After someone dies, inheritance tax may apply depending on the circumstances. Tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances and may change in future, so if you have any concerns we can talk them through with you.
What is covered and what is not?
Core Cover pays a set cash amount for a long list of accidental injuries and events, including broken bones, hospital stays, serious permanent injuries, total permanent disablement and accidental death. It does not cover everything: exclusions include self-inflicted injuries, alcohol or drug-related injuries, professional sport and speed contests, war, illegal acts and a broken nose, among others. The full list is in the policy documents, which we will provide before you take out cover.
Can I cover my children?
Yes. You can add the optional Child Cover for a small extra amount per unit. It covers your children for the same kinds of events as Core Cover, except non-accidental death, and adds a children’s cancer benefit. Children are generally covered from birth up to their 23rd birthday, and they do not have to live with you. To add Child Cover you usually need at least one eligible child under 18.
Who is eligible?
You can take out EverydayProtect if you are aged 18 to under 65 and a UK resident. Core Cover benefits reduce by 50% from your 70th birthday, and the policy ends at your 75th birthday. Because there are no medical questions, you do not have to disclose your health to be accepted, which makes it accessible to people who find other cover difficult to arrange.
Does it cover sickness?
Accident cover starts from day 1. The hospital stay benefit is extended to cover stays due to sickness and pregnancy-related complications, but only after you have held the policy for 12 months. This is a personal accident plan first and foremost, so it is not a substitute for income protection or private medical insurance, which we can also advise on if you need wider cover.
How do I claim?
If something happens, you contact MetLife and provide the details of your accident, injury or hospital stay along with any supporting evidence they ask for. The process is designed to be straightforward, benefits are paid as a cash lump sum, and for most events the policy simply continues so you stay protected. We are happy to help point you in the right direction if you are unsure how to start a claim.
